Abstract
This study examined the effect of social support on psychological well-being among elderly Catholic nuns in the Mbarara Archdiocese, Uganda. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, data were collected from 213 elderly nuns through questionnaires, interviews, focus group discussions, and observations. The findings revealed moderate levels of social support (M = 3.316, SD = 0.568) and high levels of psychological well-being (M = 3.710, SD = 0.558). Correlation analysis showed a significant positive relationship between social support and psychological well-being (r = 0.573, p < .001), while regression analysis indicated that social support significantly predicted psychological well-being (β = 0.562, p < .001). Qualitative findings highlighted the importance of companionship, emotional support, community participation, and interpersonal relationships in reducing loneliness and enhancing well-being. The study concludes that strengthening social support systems is essential for promoting psychological well-being and healthy aging among elderly Catholic nuns.
